Are you on the lookout for replacement windows to make your home more energy efficient? Are you looking for a one-stop buyer’s guide for high-performance energy-efficient windows? How about considering triple glazed windows in your home?
Exactly, more and more homeowners are considering installing windows with two or more glass panes these days. Today’s Building Regulations encourage installing double pane or double glazed windows if possible.
But there are situations where double glazed window doesn’t perform well in certain regions or climates. Then, triple glazed windows are the best alternative. This article will cover the more important things you’ll need to know about buying triple pane window.
Triple Glazed Windows: Buyer’s Guide
1. What are Triple Glazed Windows?
Triple glazed window are windows that have three panes of glass. The sheets of glass were originally held in place using a putty, also known as a glazing compound.
The three pane-construction creates a two-chamber housing for argon gas. Since an inert gas like argon is denser than air, it acts as an insulator. Gas insulators in triple glazed window protect your home from outside temperatures during winter and summer.
Also, the outer panes are coated with a very thin, colorless, non-toxic metallic oxides. These Low-E or low-emissivity coatings prevent heat from escaping your room in the winter. And in the summer, they keep your home cool by reflecting heat from the sun.
2. Features & Parts of Triple Glazed Windows
Hardware
- The auto-lock feature allows you to open and close the window with a single click.
- The frame has a built-in integral pull rail system for easy operation.
- Durable and sturdy dual hooks prevent forced entry into your home.
- Double Weather Stripping offers improved insulation by sealing any gaps around your windows, which also prevents the elements from getting in.
- Window weep holes allow good water drainage and prevent obstruction from debris.
Color
- Aluminum components in triple pane window come in colors that blend well with your interior. Aluminum is known to resist corrosion and has a high tolerance to heat.
- Its high-performance anodized finish provides exceptional abrasion and wear resistance, making aluminum a low-maintenance material in most environments.

Glass
- The triple-glazed IGU or insulated glass unit has 3 layers of pane sealed with spacers, which hold the panes together for better insulation.
- Twin air-tight chambers are filled with argon gas to reduce noise and increase insulation.
- Outer glass surfaces are coated with Low-E material to boost insulation by reducing the amount of emitted heat.
Grid
- Grids come in various patterns that you can choose from.
- Grids placed within the IGU makes cleaning the window easy and practical.
Frame
- The nail-on frame is ideal for new construction applications.
- Both the block frame and retrofit frame are suitable for replacement applications.
- The replacement flange on retrofit frames allows convenient installation without breaking the plaster finish.
3. What are Benefits of Triple Glazed Windows?
While you may think that a triple pane window is just a double glazed window with an extra pane. Is it worth installing windows with triple glazing for your home? Triple pane windows offer more benefits than you can imagine.
Here are some of the triple glazed window key benefits:
- Increased energy efficiency.
- Provide better security to your home since they are harder to break.
- Offers a more comfortable and draft-free home.
- Improved noise reduction.
4. What are Cons of Triple Glazing Windows?
If you are considering installing triple-pane windows for your home but are a bit undecided, here are some cons you should be aware of.
- Installation costs are more expensive than double glazed windows.
- Triple glazing windows may not be necessary for regions with mild climates.
- Savings on energy bills are not significantly higher compared to double glazed windows.
5. Problems with Triple Pane Window
Like any other innovation or product, triple glazing also has its downsides. Here are two of the most common issues homeowners face when investing with triple pane windows:
- Having more chambers for insulation means there is less heat from the sun that can make its way into your home.
- They are bigger and heavier than double glazed windows and so installing them into your home could lead to structural problems down the road.

6. How Much do Triple Glazed Window Cost?
The average cost for triple glazed window is around $250 to $385. However, the cost can be affected by several factors such as the:
- materials used such as uPVC, timber, etc.
- Type and size of the windows
- quality of the windows from the provider and the
- window specialist
Triple glazed window may cost around 10 to 15 % more than double glazed windows. Through payment and energy savings, it may take up to 30 years for you to regain the money spent on investing in a triple pane window.

7. Do Triple Glazed Window Reduce Noise?
While triple glazing does not make a window completely soundproof, it does, however, contribute to the reduction of noise from external sources.
To improve the soundproofing of glazed window, there are 3 factors we have to consider such as the:
- thickness or density of the glass
- spacing between the glass and the
- interlayer material
8. Does Triple Glazing Keep Heat out?
Windows with triple glazing have metallic oxide coatings on the glass that reflect solar heat. Also, the extra insulation in triple glazing window prevents more heat from entering your house compared to double glazing. The more heat that is reflected away from your home the higher is your energy savings.
9. How Long does Triple Glazing Last?
Windows with triple glazing are said to last up to 20 years according to some manufacturers. And others would say it ranges from 10 to 35 years.
However, no one can tell exactly how long they would last since it depends on several factors such as:
- weather conditions
- the material used
- where you live and
- how well maintained they are
Windows with insulation may appear as if they can last for many years. But you can’t tell if the gas has escaped from the panels over time, which could lead to a decrease in the energy efficiency level.

10. 5 Tips for Buying Triple Glazed Window
1. Identify Floor Plan
When designing your floor plan, you have to consider things like “window shading” and “window orientation”. You need to position your triple glazed window in areas where they can serve their purpose.
For instance, windows with triple glazing should face the south. The south side of your house receives most of the sun’s heat and light.
2. Consider Expected Budget and Function of your windows
There are several options to choose from in terms of windows and their functionality. Besides windows with triple glazing, there are also other variants such as Thermal Windows and Energy Efficient Windows on the market.
Thermal Windows have a lower U-factor than other window types. They are designed to be extremely effective in keeping the heat in or out of a room depending on the season. The cost of thermal/double pane windows ranges from $125 to $350 (per window).
Energy-efficient windows are designed with increased insulation. This prevents cooled or heated air from escaping your room. The cost of Energy Efficient Windows varies by brand but it is estimated to be around $185 to $385.

3. Determine Materials and Make Quotations
The materials you choose for a window frame can make or break your goal of an energy-efficient home. And so, you must choose your materials wisely.
- Wood Windows have good insulation value and are a natural, renewable resource. But they require regular maintenance and they are prone to warping & letting gas escape, insect damage, and moisture.
- Aluminum Windows are durable, sturdy, and require little maintenance. However, aluminum is a good conductor of heat, which means it is more prone to heat loss than other materials.
- Vinyl / PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Windows are more affordable and are low-maintenance materials. They are resistant to corrosion and moisture. Yet, vinyl does not perform well in cold climates. Prolonged exposure to UV rays causes the material to break over time and release harmful particles in the air.
After you have chosen your materials, get price quotations with your supplier.
4. Confirm Design
Before confirming your design, be sure to provide precise details so that the design team can perfectly capture how your windows should look and function.
5. Pay Deposit and Schedule Production
After you have negotiated for the price, your supplier will require you to deposit the agreed amount to proceed with the production. Again, make sure you have given the exact details and specifications of your design to avoid production delays.

12. Can I Replace Double Glazing with Triple Glazing?
You can replace your double glazing windows with triple ones. But, you have to consider that the frame size between the two is different.
Since triple pane window are bigger and heavier, the previous double glazed window frames might not provide adequate space or support for the new windows.
13. Difference between Double and Triple Glazed Window
Dual-pane consists of putting 2 panes of glass in a window. These 2 panes provide an extra barrier during the heating and cooling months of the year.
The airspace between the panes becomes the insulation especially if it’s filled with inert gases such as argon or krypton. The outer side of the panes are coated with a Low-E material that reflects or gains solar heat during winter or summer respectively.
In comparison, a triple glazed window has 3 panes of glass, which is more energy-efficient than a double glazed window. Also, the addition of another pane creates another airspace, which gives a significant improvement in:
- insulation
- sound reduction and
- security

15. How to Install Triple Pane Window?
Traditional windows have jambs that allow 90 to 95 percent of hot and cold air to pass through. Unwanted external noise can easily pass through the jambs as well.
Installing triple-pane windows can save you an extra 10 to 20 % on your cooling and heating bills. Here’s a quick overview of how to install triple pane windows.
Step 1 – Repairing Worn Weather Stripping
Before removing the old window, you need to inspect the top and bottom of the sill for worn-out weather stripping. Check for worn, broken, or incomplete stripping. Measure the length by hand and apply the new material.
Step 2 – Removing the Old Window
The old window can be removed from the frame with ease. There should be 2 securing clamps at the top. Loosen these clamps and the window panes should drop outward towards you. This will release the top of the window.
There should also be clamps on the base of the window, usually one on each side. Loosen the clamps and the whole window should pop out instantly. Simply repeat the steps to remove the other window.
Step 3 – Installing the New Windows
The process of installing the new windows is the reverse of that of removing the old windows. First, attach the bottom of the window into the track. And then trigger the clamps to secure the bottom of the window into place.
Now, push the top of the window towards the frame. The top should click into position without much effort. Finally, secure the top using the clamps.
