The most notable feature that defines a high gloss kitchen cabinet is in the name- it’s high gloss. This type of cabinet has a shiny finish that reflects light. So if you’re deciding what style of cabinetry you want for a contemporary-style kitchen, high gloss kitchen cabinets are a perfect choice for you!
This style was trending back in the 1970s and has made a strong comeback recently. Don’t worry, this running trend is very suitable for modern-style to minimalist kitchens with flat cabinets. They can give your kitchen a very sleek look and feel.
-Space considerations: High gloss will make the smaller kitchen feel larger, and the larger kitchen feel more spacious.
-Simple cleaning: Gloss cabinets are very easy to clean, requiring just a non-scratch cloth and no expensive cleaning materials at all.
-Modern feel : High gloss doors give your kitchen a modern luxurious feel.

There are three types of high gloss cabinets you can choose for your kitchen- lacquer, thermofoil, or acrylic. Lacquer cabinets have a nice gloss, however, the reflected light on the surface is blurred. Thermofoil is the middle ground, more reflective than lacquer. Acrylic cabinets have the clearest sheen, almost mirror-like, and reflect the most light.
Lacquer finished cabinets are on the lower-cost end of the high gloss cabinet types. Thermofoil or vinyl is also a lower cost option with fairly good quality and sheen. Acrylic cabinets cost the most but will offer you the best sheen that doesn’t fade with time.
If your cabinet is close to the stove or will be exposed to heat, choose acrylic cabinets. Lacquer and thermofoil do not withstand heat well, so don’t use this kind of kitchen cabinet finish for surfaces next to the stove.
If you have white walls, black and grey cabinets match well. If you have colored walls, you may want to offset it with white cabinets. If you want cream cabinets, they go well with walls that are shades of deep blue to sage green.
If you have pets or children in the house, it’s best not to place dark-colored high gloss cabinets at the floor level. This is because fingerprints, smudges, and dirt can be seen easily on the surface. It would be better to place darker colored cabinets at your eye level.
In the past, lacquer was used for painting cars and have a thicker coat than enamel paint.
Cabinet fronts, usually made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), are vacuum-pressed with a thin layer of vinyl.
This synthetic high-quality plastic is used as a shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It’s often used in sheets and has a mirror-like sheen.
High gloss cabinets usually achieve their sheen through products applied to their surfaces- lacquer, thermofoil, or acrylic.
Usually, the cabinets themselves are still made of solid wood, plywood, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, and other wood-based products. Some manufacturers sell prefabricated high gloss kitchen cabinets as well.
The straightforward answer is acrylic. This may be pricier, but acrylic is the most durable, is scratch-resistant, heat resistant, and has the best and clearest sheen.
Yes. You can even DIY your high gloss cabinets using lacquer finish. It dries quickly, in about 15 minutes.
That depends on the material of the gloss. Lacquer and thermofoil have limited scratch resistance. Acrylic kitchen surfaces, on the other hand, are very durable though not as scratch resistant as glass. However, small scratches on acrylic can be polished.
Yes. Your kitchen surfaces are prone to stains and dirt because you make your food in this space. High gloss is very easy to clean and looks very sleek too. If you choose acrylic kitchen cabinets, they’re also heat resistant, so there won’t be a problem being close to appliances like a stove or toaster.
Glossy cabinets are easy to clean, but easily show imperfections on the surface. So a glossy finish would be more suited for your higher cabinets. Satin cabinets also have a sheen, though not as reflective as glossy.
Satin finish can withstand a lot of scrubbing, is water-resistant, and doesn’t show imperfections as easily as gloss. So this would be a good finish for your lower or floor-level cabinets. So gloss or satin? It depends on your personal preference.
This depends on the material used for the finish. If the white gloss for your kitchen was done in lacquer, yes, it turns yellow over time. However, if your high gloss is made from acrylic, no, it won’t turn yellow.
This depends on personal preference.
Matt kitchens are more muted but have an understated elegance that gives a warm feeling. Because they absorb rather than reflect light, matt is not very advisable for small kitchens. However, matt surfaces can hide imperfections on kitchen surfaces and give you a nice even color.
Gloss kitchens, on the other hand, are very striking and sleek. They’re more suitable for contemporary kitchens. Because they reflect light, their color can vary depending on the other surfaces they reflect. Gloss kitchens are easy to clean, but imperfections, smudges, and dirt can easily be seen on their surfaces.
High gloss cabinets go from $100 per square meter to as high as $800. That would mean getting yourself high gloss cabinets for an average mid-size kitchen would cost about $1200.
You could try purchasing a set of cabinets tailored to fit your kitchen by sending your kitchen plans to a supplier. Costs for sets of cabinets will depend on the size of your kitchen and what style of cabinets you want. The cost for a set can be as low as $200 and go as high as $7000.
